The portion does not need to be large, but it is important to have carbohydrates for building more muscle. It is also important for gaining proper weight. 

You also want to have good fats with your meal plan. These good fats are going to carry you through every single workout. An example of a good fat is olive oil. You do not need a large portion, but only about a tablespoon with each meal. It is also important that you are drinking plenty of water.
